Far Knob Climb House Fire

July 3rd, 2012 - Late in the evening on Far Knob Climb a homeowner had just come home from running errands after yet again some strong thunderstorms. Immediately the homeowner was met with heavy smoke in her residence and called 911.

Wintergreen Fire and Rescue was dispatched for "Smoke in a structure" at 16:51 with the first engine marking on scene at 16:59. Captain Pugh reported nothing showing from side "A" upon arrival and met the homeowner outside reporting that she thought her husband was still inside. Captain Pugh marked in command of the scene and reported it a working incident requesting additional resources from the county of Nelson and Augusta. A search for the husband was initiated immediately and the basement and first floor were searched with nothing found. After the initial search the husband showed up outside and it was reported that he was out on errands as well and was not inside the residence. The crews then redirected their efforts to fire attack and finding the cause of the fire.

After ventilating the house the crews found that heavy smoke and heat was coming from the floor in the living area adjacent to the kitchen. They started cutting the floor in that area and found that the fire was in the floor system. Crews attacked the fire from the first floor and the basement and had the fire knocked down quickly. Crews remained on scene for mop-up and checking for any extensions.

Units on scene from Wintergreen were Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Response 9, Medic 177, Squad 1, Chief 2, and Chief 3. Rockfish units on scene were Engine 51, Tanker 53, and Medic 57. Augusta County's Wilson Fire Department and Wintergreen Chief 1 were staged at Wintergreen Station 1 to handle additional calls. No injuries were reported on this incident. Thanks again to all that helped!
