Pond Ice Rescue

At approximately 07:30 this morning Wintergreen Fire Department and Wintergreen Rescue Squad were dispatched to a patient that had fallen through the ice while trying to catch their dog. The caller reported that the person was under this ice. Personnel from the Sheriff’s Office and a Wintergreen Fire & Rescue off-duty Captain arrived quickly after the call was dispatched and were able to use throw-bags in attempt to get the patient removed from the water. Unfortunately, the patient was to far away and the ropes didn’t reach. Minutes later the Wintergreen Water Rescue Team arrived with the inflatable raft and was able to reach the victim and successfully remove them from the water. The patient was transported with non-life threatening injuries to UVA. The dog was also reported to have made it out of the water successfully. Units on scene were Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, NEMS Medic 93, Wintergreen Squad 1, Response 174 w/ water rescue trailer, Response 61, Captains 61 & 64, Lieutenant 64, Piney River Fire Department Engine 27, and additional members from Company 1, 3, and 5.
